The Houston Association was represented by Pilgrim UCC, 1st Congregational, and Cathedral of Hope Houston at the Houston Food Bank, located at 535 Portwall St in the southeast quadrant of Houston.  This is the 3rd time the Houston Association has met on a Friday evening to assist the Food Bank with the packing of back packs for students, and the unpacking donations for distributions.  The music keeps a rocking grove as this worthwhile work includes a series of smiles, laughter, and love of purpose shared with other volunteers.

The mission of the Houston Food Bank is to lead the fight against hunger.  The food bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities.  Food usually comes from various sources in the food industry, like grocery stores and wholesalers that have thousands of pounds of food to give away – food that could otherwise be thrown away.

The Houston Food Bank warehouses food, and with help from volunteers, sort, pack and redistribute it to the community. Traditionally, a food bank does not distribute food directly to those in need.  Several Houston Association Churches have food pantries that benefit from the donations and receive food distribution.

The Houston Food Bank also has a need for folks to help prepare the meals for their school program. The work is done at the Keegan Kitchen which is located at 2445 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77009. The Houston Association has been scheduled to work from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM on June 16th, July 21st and August 18th. Two or three volunteers make a huge difference for the Keegan Kitchen. Join us if you are able!

Remember You MUST wear long pants, a shirt with sleeves (no tank tops or sleeveless shirts) and shoes with closed toes. Please do NOT wear jewelry.  Even small stud earrings can get loose and fall into food.  While you're in the kitchen, you'll be wearing aprons, gloves, and hairnets (you can bring your own cap.) Limited lot and street parking is available. Carpooling is recommended whenever possible.
